The <a href="https://www.3farmate.com">3Farmate Robotics</a> team is super excited to announce its win of GH&cent;30,000 from the <a href="https://www.jica.go.jp/english/index.html?">Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)</a> Brush Up Lean Program competition to expand its operations and scale up its Technology infrastructure. &nbsp; The JICA Brush Up Lean Program competition was a initiative by the JICA and <a href="https://mdf.nl/ghana">MDF West Africa</a> teams, to enable startups in the Ghanaian ecosystem execute operations in a lean manner, so as to maximize potential while running on limited resources. The call for applications came in late last year (2021), where a total of 168 applications were received. The JICA team then shortlisted 20 startups to make it to the competition, of which <a href="https://www.3farmate.com">3Farmate Robotics</a> was a part. &nbsp; &nbsp; To qualify for the final pitch, all shortlisted startups had to go through a comprehensive 6-week long training program, learning lean concepts while understanding business development for startups. After the training program, all 20 startups were then to pitch to a jury comprising of representative from JICA, MDF West Africa, <a href="http://adc.gov.gh/">Accra Digital Center</a>, and <a href="https://www.stanbicbank.com.gh/">Stanbic Bank</a>. It was a tough competition, as all startups had brilliant ideas. &nbsp; &nbsp; After the pitch day, the jury selected 8 startups out of the initial 20, to receive GH&cent;30,000 financial support, in addition to a 3-month long extensive incubation program to enable these businesses scale up. 3Farmate Robotics gave an impressive pitch and was selected among the 8. This was a huge moment for the team, as works to automate Agriculture here in Ghana has been the sole mission of the company, and this win only meant operations would get a boost. &nbsp; &nbsp; For us to be able to grow enough food to feed the growing population here in Ghana, there is the need for us to have highly efficient tools to till the land to maximize its potential, and that is where 3Farmate Robotics comes in: 3Farmate Robotics is an R&amp;D AgriTech startup that is focused on building an automated seed planting mechanism for crop production companies, by leveraging cutting edge Artificial Intelligence and Robotics to build Autonomous Electric Robots. &nbsp; &nbsp; The company first released its <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8i3DoOkF-s">concept design</a> of a seed planting robot last year (2021), called FAMA, which showed its vision to have robots perform seed planting on a large scale. These robots will be able to operate on their own devoid of human intervention, and will be able to work on any terrain for longer periods of time as they will have Solar Technology incorporated. This will mean crop production companies will have the chance to work with highly efficient, precise and reliable labor, compared to traditional manual labor and heavy duty machinery; machinery which often cause soil compaction and have carbon emissions. &nbsp; &nbsp; The GH&cent;30,000 financial support from the JICA Lean Program Competition will be used to scale up the company&#39;s core Technology infrastructure for Robotic Communications in GPS and Cellular Network denied areas, Artificial Intelligence processing, and for building the company&#39;s first production-ready seed planting robots by late September this year. &nbsp; &nbsp; 3Farmate Robotics has secured two partnerships with two of the largest crop production companies in Ghana, <a href="https://greengoldfarmsghana.com/">Green Gold Farms</a> and <a href="https://farmappgh.com/farms/">Farm App Ghana</a>, to run pilot programs on their farms located in the Northern parts of the country. These pilot programs will be focused on demonstrating the Technology to not only the crop production companies, but also to the rest of the world and other crop production companies. The company&#39;s first prototypes will be deployed this June, to perform these demonstrations, and will provide the team the chance to data on their robots&#39; performance, to evaluate and improve current systems as preparations to go live this September are underway. &nbsp; &nbsp; The future of large scale Agriculture is with intelligent machines that work 10 times more efficiently than conventional labor, and 3Farmate Robotics is super excited to be contributing to pioneering this new space. The world&#39;s food insecurity is nothing new since its stark effects are prevalent in low-income countries and are often linked to poverty, conflicts, climate extremes, soil degradation, post-harvest losses, pests, and diseases. Billions of people experience the severity of food insecurity in different forms, resulting from drought, worsening fiscal constraints, currency devaluations, substandard food produce, water shortages, rise in food and oil prices.

According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), food security means having, at all times, both physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. So, food security is not merely about producing sufficient food but also investing in sustainable food production that is affordable and has nutritional value. The principal focus is to produce enough food consistently that can feed your &quot;own&quot; people with a surplus to provide for the nutritional needs of other countries. Food quality and quantity are strategic measures to control the long-standing drivers of acute hunger and its adverse impact on an already broken food system. Before the Covid19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, parts of the world, especially in Africa were susceptible to hunger due to staggering cases of conflicts, climate, and market shocks, food losses (at the stage of production, postharvest, and processing) and food waste (at the end of the food chain as a result of the retailer and consumer behavior).

The direct economic consequences of food waste (excluding fish and seafood) run to the tune of $750 billion annually. FAO estimates that nearly a third of the world&#39;s food is lost or wasted along the food chain from the farm to the marketplace. Similarly, developing countries suffer more food losses during agricultural production, while in middle-and-high income regions, food waste at the retail and consumer levels tends to be higher. Rapid rise in population, anthropogenic (human-caused) greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), loss of biodiversity, and eco-systems are a growing concern. However, biological threats account for 40 percent of global food loss which poses one of the biggest upsets to food security. These country-specific events, put a strain on resources and disrupt food supplies, globally.

After an intense and rigorous program, we have been awarded a grant of $30,000, which will be instrumental in propelling our innovative solutions forward.
